Welcome

Welcome to the Horse and Groom in Basford. We are a traditional local public house offering a range of top quality cask conditioned beers from around the country. We pride ourselves in offering our customers unrivaled quality in fine ales and food, served by our friendly and efficient staff. The Horse & Groom is well known for the quality of the real ale served through one of the nine regular rotating hand pumps. We have a permanent pump for differing Milds’, a once popular drink seeing a resurgance and a Regular CAMRA LocAle pump always featuring a beer from the Nottingham Area.
The Horse and Groom in Basford is listed in the Camra Good Beer Guide and regularly recieves perfect 20 out of 20 scores from Cask Marque.
“The Horse & Groom was the first freehouse to receive the Cask Marque Accreditation in Nottingham”
The pub has also been named as a finalist and won many local awards such as being one vote away from winning ‘Best Mild on Trail’ for Nottingham CAMRA Mild in May for 2009. We were also Runners Up in Nottingham CAMRA Pub of the Year for 2009!
In 2007 the Horse & Groom recieved a prestigious Pub of Excellence Award from Nottingham CAMRA as well as ‘Best Mild on Trail’ in the 2006 Mild in May.
The pub is steeped in brewing history. The building was originally the brewery tap for the once great Shipstone’s Brewery on the opposite side of North Gate, with the old school house now known as The Spire that was provided for the families of the workers at Shipstone’s. The building became the training centre for prospective pub managers and tennants and a Social Club and Canteen for brewery employees. Following the Breweries sale to Greenall’s and subsequent closure in 1994 the building stood empty until 1998 when Bartsch Inns purchased their first pub. The plan was to create a traditional style public house which focused on quality – quality products, kept and presented perfectly. An area of interest is the brewery memrobillia posted around the walls of the pub, quite often from breweries which don’t exist anymore, and some items dating back to 1930’s.
